Biography

Shown as previous owner of the Chiswick estate and the enslaved people upon it in Jamaica 1788-1796. A John Vernon had also made the return in 1778; between these two dates the estate was shown as belonging to Matthew Wallen (q.v.). Very probably the John Vernon whose death in Jamaica was recorded in 1788.

  1. '10 [March 1788] At Jamaica [death of] John Vernon, Esq. distinguished, while living for his integrity, and at his death for gratitude of heart.'
