Owner in 1817 of Plantation Lemlair or Limlair in Berbice. Died at Edinburgh in 1819, 'of Berbice'.

David Alston carries some more detail on 'John Bethune (Alness)': 'In 1801 John Bethune (Alness) entered into a partnership with two other men from Easter Ross - Hugh Rose of Glastullich and J Crawford Macleod of Geanies – in plantation Geanies on the Corentyne coast. The partnership was dissolved in 1808 and a new partnership, called New Geanies, was formed by Macleod and Bethune, to which Rose advanced large sums of money. The estate was sequestrated in 1814 and Rose pursued his case. [Decisions of the Court of Session Nov 1825 to July 1841].' Alston shows John Bethune as marrying Margaret, daughter of the late David Barry of Grenada, in 1809 [in fact 1808] at Berbice.
