Biography

Slave-owner of Barbados, also holding enslaved people on Jamaica.

  1. Will of William Collier of St Andrew Barbados [made in 1762 and sworn in Barbados in 1763] proved in London 01/04/1776. In the will, Collier left a piece of land called Willoughbys or Skeet with 15 acres and a list of named enslaved people (Robin, Dyer, Scipio, Pompey, Lisbon and Alleck, males; Hesketh and little Edmund, boys; and Peggy, Tomsia, Sarah, Bellah, Hannah, Molly and Katy, females) to his wife Mary, his Aunt Mary Keith and his brothers Abel Collier and James Keith Collier and his sisters Barbara Jane Frances and Susan Collier in common for life. He instructed his executors in Jamaica to sell the estate known as Ochos Rios in St Ann to which he held the reversion in fee on the death of his wife: one of his executors, John Williams, later appeared as owner; he also left an [unnamed] sugar estate in St Andrew Barbados which his father had died possessed of, with the proceeds to be remitted to John Serocold for the benefit of his wife Mary and then to [William Collier's] daughter Jane at 21, until when she would have an annuity of £60 p.a rising to £120 p.a..
