Biography

London merchant, mortgagee and then owner of Mangrove Pond and Giddy Hall in Barbados, which he sold in 1792. Buried at Holy Trinity Clapham. The architects George Somers Leigh Clarke (d. 1882) and the latter's nephew Somers Clarke (d. 1926) were lineal descendants.

  1. Will of Somers Clarke gentleman of St Bride [given in the will as St Bridget], City of London [made in 1789] proved 02/03/1795. He left: an annuity of £40 p.a. to his wife Sarah; £10 to his son Christopher Somers Clarke 'and no more', he having 'received a considerable part of my property and more than he deserved'; 1 shilling to his son George Somers Clarke 'for his cruel and wicked behaviour', he also having received property 'before he obtained thereby a fellowship of £90 p.a. besides his curacy which he never deserved'; his son Somers £20 p.a. given that he will 'receive through my assistance a pension of £45 p.a.; and £40 p.a. to his daughter Cecilia and his three youngest sons Samuel, Theophilus and Joseph.
