9th May 1776 - 6th Jan 1860
Joseph Raymond Aquart was the eldest son of Jean Marie Aquart and Marie Catherine Coulon. He was born 09/05/1776, St. Pierre de L’Anse, Gouyave, Grenada. Marie Catherine Coulon was from Grenada, so she likely returned home for her lying in, which explains why Raymond was born in Grenada and not in St. Lucia. Joseph Raymond went by the name Raymond (sometimes Raimond).
In 1815, he is listed as being in possession of the "Retraite" sugar estate estate in Vieux Fort, St. Lucia as one of the inheritors of William Plant, his father-in-law.
He retired to France to Saint Avit du Moiron in the Gironde with his wife Elisabeth (Betsy) Plant. She died in France on 04/06/1830. In 1831 he married Marie Pourquery in the town of Ste. Foy La Grande, also in the Gironde. At the time of his death at Saint Avit du Moiron on 06/01/1860 a he was 85 and Marie Pourquery was 58. The family of Raymond Marucheau (his nephew) and Mary Jane Goodman were also living at "Les Goulards". Today the chateau is known as Chateau du Seignal.
After his death, an inventory of his assets shows the following:
Estate of "Les Goulards" (chateau and vineyard) in the communes of St. Avit du Moiron and Bazas, Gironde; farm of "Les Luquets" in the commune of St. Philippe near Ste. Foy, Gironde; Estate of "La Retraite" in St. Lucia at Vieux Fort; Estate of "La Ressource" in St. Lucia at Vieux Fort. As he had no children, these assets all passed to John Goodman Marucheau, his great nephew, who married a relative of his second wife Marie Constance Pourquery.
Joseph Raymond Aquart is buried in Saint Avit du Moiron along with several members of the Marucheau and de Chanaud families.
He is shown as of St Lucia in the Slave Registers for the Reform estate on St Vincent 1825-30.
