Mary Jane Coghlan (née Marshall)

Awarded the compensation for six enslaved people in Kingston and eight in St Andrew Jamaica as owner-in-fee.

1. Tentatively identified as Mary Jane Marshall, who on 23/06/1832 at St Mary Islington married Sir William Marcus Coghlan, later Political Resident of Aden. Miss Mary Jane Marshall was shown as the owner of enslaved people in Kingston in the 1823, 1826 and 1829 Slave Registers: however, she is also shown as owning enslaved people in St Mary rather than St Andrew. Subsequent England censuses show her as born c. 1808; a Mary Jane Marshall daughter of John and Isabella Marshall was baptised 25/06/1807 at St Pancras Old Church.

T71/861 Kingston claim no. 919; T71/865 St Andrew claim no. 90; The wills of two men both named as John Marshall Gentleman of Kingston Jamaica proved 08/11/1810 and 15/01/1822 appear to be unconnected with Mary Jane Coghlan nee Marshall, PROB 11/1516/233 and PROB 11/1652/222.
