John Jones

Liverpool merchant, of Everton Crescent Liverpool, assigned the compensation for the enslaved people on Samuel Harman's, Mount and Montpelier estates on Antigua from the claimants (who included John Athill, Joseph Lavicount and Hardman Earle).

1. Will of John Jones merchant of Everton Crescent Liverpool proved 27/07/1842. Under the will, which included references to Jones' land holding in Denbighshire, he left his estate to partible inheritance equally among his children after his wife's death. In a codicil he made his son Thomas Roberts Jones executor alongside his brother-in-law William Rutter Dawes and one other. William Rutter Dawes has an entry in the ODNB as 'astronomer': the entry says of his father William Dawes (1762-1836), the abolitionist and governor of Sierra Leone between 1792 and 1796, that he ran a sugar estate on Antigua 'employing freed slaves.' It also says of William Rutter Dawes himself: 'Dawes's sister, Judith, had married John Jones, who had business interests in the dockyard at Antigua.'
