Henry Moss

There is ambiguity about the identity of this awardee, but this is probably Henry Moss of Crooked Island. It is also probably the same man as the awardee of a second smaller award in Bahamas.

1. Henry Moss of Crooked Island was convicted with his wife Helen of the maltreatment of the enslaved woman Kate in the 1820s. Although Henry Moss of Crooked Island, the convicted man, has been identified in secondary material as the nephew of James Moss senior (q.v.), it appears that Henry Moss of Liverpool (q.v.), who was certainly a nephew of James Moss senior and brother of John Moss and James Moss junior, was a different man. To date no death-date or probate has been found for Henry Moss of Crooked Island. The will of Henry Moss of Liverpool, made in the mid-1830s although proved in 1848, mentions only property in British Guiana, not in the Bahamas. The will of James Moss senior characterises Henry Moss of Crooked Island simply as his 'friend'.
