Sheffield Neave

London West India merchant and Governor of the Bank of England, son of Sir Thomas Neave (q.v.): he appears in the compensation records only as collecting at the National Debt Office, but his father and the family firm (Richard & Thomas Neave, q.v.) are both present in the records.

Born 11/04/1799 Hampstead, son of Sir Thomas Neave (1761-1848) of Hampstead and Dagnam Park, High Sheriff of Essex, and Frances Digby, daughter of the Dean of Durham, and grandson of Sir Richard Neave (d. 1814); educated Eton and Christ Church Oxford (BA 1821); 'West India merchant' (1861 census), partner in Richard & Thomas Neave, merchants of 2 Billiter Square, later of 4 New Broad Street. Director of Bank of England 1841-death, Deputy-Governor 1855-1857 and its Governor 1857-1859.
   Married in 1851 to Mary, daughter of David Richard Morier. Died 23/09/1868 Oak Hill House, Hampstead.

   Airey Middleton Sheffield Neave (1916-1979) MP for Abingdon, campaign manager for Margaret Thatcher in 1974-1975 and Shadow Secretary for Northern Ireland killed by the INLA in 1979, was the great-grandson of Sheffield Neave and the son of Sheffield Airey Neave (1879-1961), 'a distinguished entomologist.'
