Benjamin Haughton Tharp

Slave-owner in Jamaica, owner of Hampton estate, and trustee and executor of Eliza Mary Tharp (owner of Blue Hole in Hanover, Jamaica, d. 1831), and identified in her will as the nephew of her husband. Benjamin Haughton Tharp died in 1834 in transit to Britain. He was the son of William Tharp (1762-1809) (q.v.) and brother of John Tharp VII and William Tharp of Heavitree, Devon.

1. Will of Benjamin Haughton Tharp of St James Jamaica [intending in a day or two to embark for England] [made in 1834] proved 23/01/1836. He left his plantation called Hampton 'and the negroes and other slaves, cattle, stock and plantation utensils thereon' to his nephew [and namesake] Ben Haughton Tharp alias Benjamin Haughton Tharp, son of his 'late dear brother William and Mary his wife' subject to annual payments of £100 p.a. until 1848 to Jenny Ellis alias Jenny Ellis Tharp for the support and education of his [the testator's] natural children with her, and thereafter £25 p..a. for Jenny Ellis. He also left £2000 in trust for his reputed children (Elizabeth Chambers Tharp; Thomas Haughton Tharp; William Haughton Tharp; and Benjamin Haughton Tharp). He left £2000 to his dear brother John Tharp [John Tharp VII] and £1500 to his brother Thomas Reid Tharp, £3000 to the children of his deceased brother William, and £100 currency each to two other reputed children Mary Horlock Tharp and Martha Horlock Tharp.
