James Smith of Gower Street

Executor of Benjamin Hopkinson (q.v.), in whose will he was identified as of Gower Street and the father of Benjamin Hopkinson's godchild Jane Hopkinson Smith. The executors of James Smith, including Robert Lang (q.v.) were shown as the owners of the Drill and Zealand estates in British Guiana.

1. The will of James Smith of Somerset Place Bath was proved 17/01/1811. The first provision was that all his books of account should be delivered to Robert Lang, one of the executors. He left £4000 to each of his five daughters, including Jane Hopkinson Smith. His son Edward James Smith had been provided for by his entry into the East India Co. He left his estates in British Guiana in trust to his wife Diana or Dinah, son Edward James Smith and Robert Lang, with Zealand charged with £400 p.a. for his wife and his moiety of the Drill charged with an additional £200 p.a. for her. He also had land in the parish of Westdown in Devon, on which he secured an annuity for his brother Daniel. In a codicil dated 06/11/1807 and made in Bath he made the £4000 to his daughters contingent on the consent of their mother or their uncle Robert Lang to any marriage they made before 21.
