Philip Lovell

Slave-owner on Barbados, an absentee at the time he made his will in 1821.

1. Will of Philip Lovell of [Frenchay] Winterbourne, Gloucestershire [made in 1821] was proved 23 Jan 1824. He left his household effects to his daughter Elizabeth Went Philips [sic], wife of John Randall Phillips attorney of the island of Barbados. He secured £700 in three monetary legacies on his estate known [and the enslaved people attached to it] as Durants, and left further sums totalling some £600 to legatees in England, of which £100 was in trust for Samuel Baker the son of Elizabeth Baker formerly his servant, and £200 each to Hannah Vaughan of Bristol and Elizabeth Wheeler of London. He left £3333 6s 8d in trust for the five children of Hannah Vaughan of Bristol spinster, and £1333 6s 8d for the two daughters of Elizabeth Wheeler of London. He left his estate and enslaved people in Barbados and his property at Frenchay to his daughter Elizabeth Went Phillips, giving her the power to will it; failing which, it was to pass to her children. His trustees and executors George Gibbs of Bristol and Jonathan Blenman renounced probate in favour of Elizabeth Went Phillips.
