John Howlett

Owner of Aboukir estate in St Ann, Jamaica. Deceased by 1827. His executor and trustee was John Bloxam Elin.

1. Will of John Howlett merchant [formerly of Kingston Jamaica lately of Chatham Place in the parish of Hackney Middlesex but presently residing at Cherry Garden sugar works in the parish] of St Andrew Jamaica [made in 1826] proved 20/04/1827. Under the will he left £1000 each to his brother Marmaduke Jackson Howlett and to Margaret North the sister of his late wife. He also left her an annuity of £40 p.a., as he did equally to his sister Priscilla Howlett of Hornsea in the East Riding of Yorkshire, and £20 p.a.to his cousin Ann Johnston, wife of ____Johnston of Hull shoemaker. He left the remainder of his estate in trust, to be sold in the case of the real estate, to fund legacies of £2000 each to his sons and daughters, with the residue to his eldest son, failing whom he left half his estate to his brother Marmaduke Jackson Howlett, 1/8th to William North of Hull, 1/8th to Margaret North and 1/8th each to his cousins Maria North and Mary North of Leven near Beverley. In a codicil of 13/09/1826 he added Richard Briggs as trustee but with the proviso that (unlike his appointment of his original trustees) Richard Briggs' debts to him were not forgiven in the appointment. In a further codicil he left his carriage to Benjamin Caractacus Patey of Kingston, and monetary legacies of £50 to William Brooks King of Kingston and £100 to his [the testator's] godson Frederick Chappel son of Samuel Chappel 'memoir seller'[?] of New Bond Street, an annuity of £50 p.a. to Mrs Margaret North wife of William North of the parish of Leven and £30 p.a. to Maria North, one of the daughters of Margaret North and £20 p.a. to Mary North, another of her daughters; he also instructed his trustees to build a 'neat chapel' on Aboukir and offer it to the Lord Bishop and then to the Wesleyan Society; and he revoked the appointment of Richard Briggs as executor and trustee, instead continuing in the position of running the production side of the estate while forbidding him any role in the disposal of the produce (on which he would continue to earn a 5% commission as in recent years, as well as his salary as manager).
