Joseph Hayne the younger

Slave-owner in Jamaica, in Britain when he made his will in 1826 but in Jamaica in the 1830s. Son of Joseph Hayne the elder (q.v.) and Catherine Carter formerly Hayne (q.v.).

1. The will of Joseph Hayne of Burderop Park Wiltshire [made in 1826] was proved 22/04/1845. In the will, he left William Carter of Worthing Sussex an annuity of £500 p.a. after the decease of William Carter's wife Catherine. He left Haddon and his other property in trust for Elizabeth Hyde Carter, his sister, wife of William Adair Carter. It identified a further 'brother-in-law' [in fact step-brother] as Frederick Hayne Carter. In a codicil of 1826, he gave his mother, identified as Catherine Carter wife of William Carter an annuity of £250 p.a, over and above the annuity she was entitled to under the will of his [Joseph Hayne's] late father. [In the compensation process, Catherine Carter pursued a claim based on an annuity of £500 p.a. owed to her but unpaid by Joseph Hayne the younger as proprietor of the estate].
