Biography

  1. Will of John Davis Molineux of the island of Montserratt [sic] [made in 1761] proved 04/04/1770. Under the will he left his wife Ann an annuity of £120 p.a., and the 'use' of named enslaved people: Sophy and her son Hector; Betty sister of Sophy and her two 'mulatto children' being girl and boy; Charley, brother of Sophy and Betty; little Maria daughter of Antigua; Molly' Anna; Maria; and James. He left his daughter Margaret £2500 at 21: she was to be kept in Great Britain for the advantage of her education, to be taught to 'write speak French and play upon the harpsichord' and to have £100 p.a. to support her education. He left his 1/16th share in the ship Charming Sally master James Doran to his brother Charles. He left his estate known as Water Work to his son, also John Davis Molineux, and his heirs, failing which to his daughter Margaret and her heirs, failing which then to his brother Charles and his heirs. His executors were his brother Charles Molineux and cousin Crisp Molineux. [Although he appears to have intended to entail the estate, his son John Davis Molineux sold it in 1775].
