Sir John Brisco 1st Bart.

Sir John Brisco 1st bart. of Crofton in Cumberland, from an established gentry family, son of Rev. John Brisco DD and Catherine Hylton, married Carolina Alicia Fleming, daughter of Gilbert Fane Fleming and Lady Camilla Bennet. Father of Sir Wastel Brisco 2nd bart. (q.v.).

1. Will of Sir John Brisco of Crofton Place Cumberland [and of Wimpole Street] [made in 1804] was proved 04/02/1806. Under the will he left his household effects at Wimpole Street to his wife and at his Crofton Place to his son Wastel Brisco. He left in trust to his cousin Wastel Brisco of Devonshire Street and William Manning of Billiter Square 'all that my plantation estate containing one thousand and eight acres or thereabouts called the Salt Ponds plantation in the Island of St Christopher...by me lately purchased of the devisees named in the will of William Priddie of the said island...with the stock of slaves, cattle and other live and dead stock and stores of every sort', to be kept stocked and the profits paid to his wife Lady Brisco for life and then to his son Wastel Brisco, and then to whoever was on Wastel Brisco's death the tenant-in-tail of the testator's estate in Cumberland. He entailed his Cumberland estates and left £8000 to each of his younger children, and annuities of £200 p.a. to his sister Mrs Dorothy Morland now residing at Kendal in Westmoreland, and of £20-£50 p.a. each to numerous female relatives and others. In a codicil of 1805 he specified that Pope's Villa in Twickenham and his freehold pew in Isleworth parish church 'which I lately purchased' be sold. In a second codicil dated 18/11/1805, he said left £500 for the rebuilding of the parish church at Thursby, the present one being in 'ruinous condition'.
