James Bruce Lt-Governor of Dominica

Early purchaser of land in Dominica, where he was shown as the original purchaser of St David Lots nos. 45-48 and then as co-owner of the same land with Sir Law. Dundas and Simon Frazer.

1. Will of James Bruce Lieutenant-Governor of Dominica but now residing at Sloane Street proved 20/05/1808. Under the will he left annuities of £100 p.a. each to his sisters Ann Bruce and Jane Bruce spinsters of Edinburgh, secured on the Castle Bruce estate, and an annuity of £50 p.a. to Jane Strachan wife of Francis Strachan of India, and a further annuity of £50 p.a. to his natural daughter Ann then at Preston Pans. He left his residuary estate in trust for his wife Margaret. He commented that his property was not so valuable as might have been expected' One of his executors was his brother-in-law William Thomson of Sloane Street, who had extended care to James Bruce during the latter's illness: presumably the testator was living at William Thomson's house when he made his will.
