John Telfer

Slave-owner in Jamaica, heir of his uncle Robert Telfer. Deceased c. 1810 with heirs in Scotland (John Telfer of Airdrie pursued compensation on the Monkland estates).

1. Will of John Telfer [at present of Monkland in the parish] of St David Jamaica [made in 1810] proved 28/11/1814. In the will he identified himself as nephew and heir of Robert Telfer deceased, from whom he had lately inherited. He ordered his property in Jamaica to be sold. He left 100 guineas or £100 to each of eight or nine individuals in Jamaica and Glasgow, including 4 merchants in the latter. He left annuities of £200 p.a. to his sister Lillias Telfer of Cathrent near Glasgow; £50 p.a to Rev. Jonathan Rankin of Paisley; and £50 p.a. each to his kinsman Robert Rankin of the parish of Slammanan [or Slamanan] in Scotland, to William Telfer of Slammanan, to William Russell residing near Ruthenglen, to Robert Mangall of Glasgow, and to James Mangall of Glasgow (both the latter described as kinsmen). His residuary heir was his relation William Telfer of Glasgow 'mason.'

1. PROB 11/1562/429. The Jamaica Almanac for 1811 ostensibly covering the givings-in for 1809 gave him as John Telfer as deceased, whereas he made his will 2nd February 'one thousand eight and ten' [sic].
