Biography

Apparently transatlantic slave-owner on Barbados.

Will of William Holder of St Thomas Barbados [made in 1752] proved in London 01/02/1753. In the will he left 'all my plantation called Black Rock in the parish of St James' to his son James Holder 'except a negro man a cooper called James which [sic] I b[ough]t of Thomas Lake, and him I give to my son William Holder.' He instructed that two-thirds of his wife's marriage settlement be paid out of his son William's estate and one-third from that of his son James. He left his estate given variously as Hellaby or Hillaby [and the enslaved people on it ] to his son William, together with his property in Britain and the remainder of his estate. He then provided that his sons William and James be sent to England when they reach nine years to be given a 'genteel education.' He ordered that the sugars from his estates be consigned to William Whitaker of London.
