Lady Elizabeth Stewart or Stuart formerly McLachlan

Co-owner of estates and enslaved people in Jamaica with her nephew Lachlan McLachlan (q.v.). She had married Alexander McLachlan of Jamaica and then remarried to Sir Robert Stuart or Stewart.

1. Will of Lady Elizabeth Stuart of Brighthelmstone proved 02/04/1811. Under the will she rehearsed her marriage settlement, in which she had pledged her husband Sir Robert Stuart £800 p.a. if he survived her, and subject to that agreement and under the authority reserved to her by it, she instructed her trustees to sell her property in Jamaica, to pay monetary legacies totalling £26,000 to her nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grandnephews, generally £2000 to females and £1000 to males: they were also her residuary legatees. She had Elizabeth, the daughter of Dugald McLachlan (q.v.), living with her.
