Samuel Buckmaster

Resident slave-owner, with an 'outside' family.

1. Will of Samuel Buckmaster of St George Jamaica [made in 1791] proved 07/10/1803. In the will he left an annuity of £50 p.a. to a niece called Sarah Jesset [sp?] and Isabella Buckmaster, wife of his nephew John Buckmaster, £500 to each of Isabella Buckmaster's two daughters Juliana Isabella and Harriet, and annuities of £20 p.a. each to his reputed son Thomas Buckmaster and reputed daughters Margaret, Joanne, Dorothy, Ann and Mary. Two further reputed sons William and Joseph were apprenticed in Bristol, and he left them annuities of £20 p.a. on condition that they lived in Britain. He left an annuity of £30 p.a. and two barrels of beef p.a. to the children's mother, his housekeeper Betty, and provided she should stay in the house at Windsor Castle for life if she chose. He left further annuity of £20 currency p.a. or £20 p.a. sterling if he chose to live in Britain to a man named Joseph Buckmaster on Windsor Castle, not further identified. He left Windsor Lodge itself subject to the annuities, and the rest of his property including a lease on Carlisle in St George to his nephew John Buckmaster of Lambeth Terrace. In a codicil of 1800 he left £2000 to each of his grand-nieces if they married with their parents' consent, and gave his nephew's second son John use of the house on Windsor Castle if he should come to Jamaica to take care of the estate.
