George Sutherland

Slave-owner in St Catherine, Jamaica, after inheriting an estate and enslaved people from his bother Alexander Sutherland (who d. c. 1798). This was the George Sutherland who has an entry in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography as 'HBC master.' The entry shows George Sutherland as inheriting property in Jamaica from his brother c. 1798 and retiring to London, where he died c. 1811.

The will of George Sutherland of Bethnal Green [made in 1805] proved 15/07/1811 is certainly both the man of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography entry and the owner of the estate in St Catherine unnamed in the Slave Register but shown as Berrydale in the will of George Sutherland of Bethnal Green. He described himself as 'late of Hudsons Bay in North America but now of Patriot Square Bethnal Green'. He left Berrydale and the enslaved people on it, the former property of his brother Alexander Sutherland, to Alexander Lean of Hudsons Bay House Leadenhall Street in trust, to sell it as soon as possible, to pay the interest to his daughter Jane until 21, with the rest of his estate going in trust to support his wife Eleanor Judd Sutherland.
