Biography

  1. Will of Francis March [late of Jamaica but now of] Argyll Buildings Middlesex [made 05/10/1749] proved 02/04/1752. He left £200 currency to Mary Fleetwell 'if she be living' and £1500 sterling at 21 to his natural son Francis 'by the body of Mary Fleetwell.' He had he said 'made use of' £1050 of New South Sea stock from a total of £2850 belonging to William Batcheller [sic] and his wife of which he was trustee, and he instructed his own executors to replace it. He affirmed the £400 p.a. annuity to his wife under his marriage settlement, and added £100 p.a. to it to encourage her to accept it in lieu of dower and thereby avoid disputes with her daughter 'on account of the personal estate upon sugar works.' His residuary heir was his daughter Elizabeth March, with contingent remainder to John Ellis, son of his cousin George Ellis deceased. In a codicil he provided that his daughter should have £200 p.a. until she was eight, £300 p.a until 14 and then £400 p.a. until 21, and in a further codicil he increased his wife's annuity by a further £100 p.a.
