William Lewis of Winchester

Son and co-heir of William Lewis of Jamaica and Chertsey Abbey and brother of Matthew Lewis (both of whom q.v.).

1. Will of William Lewis of Winchester Hampshire proved 10/06/1801. He opened the will by charging on his share of the enslaved people and cattle on the estates of Cornwall, Black Morass, and Hordley in Jamaica the debts he had incurred before 25/12/1783; the debts he had incurred subsequently he charged on his personal estate in Britain. He left his share in the people on the estates to his brother Matthew for life with remainder to the latter's son Matthew Gregory Lewis, except Ishmael, an enslaved man ('a Negro slave man') on Cornwall whom he manumitted. He left £2500 to his sister Jane Woolls [?] and 100 guineas to his godson William Spencer Whitelocke.
