???? - 1793
Resident slave-owner in Jamaica, probably a lawyer in Kingston. Son of Joseph Phipps of Jamaica, according to the will of his [Joseph Barton Phipps] great-uncle John Phipps of Tottenham proved in 1770. The land in St Andrews described in the will of Joseph Barton Phipps as Blairs Pen or Unity Park Pen has not yet been traced beyond the will of his uncle and heir John Phipps of Southwark (q.v.).
Monumental Inscriptions shows a plaque in St Andrews Church: JOSEPH BARTON PHIPPS OB. 30th JUNE, 1793, ALT. 30 Y., 1 M., 29 D and JOHN PHIPPS, DIED 9th MARCH, 1798, AGED 29 Y., 8 M., 5 D. In light of Joseph Barton Phipps' will, John Phipps must have died in 1788 rather than 1798. Willow John Phipps of Tottenham proved 21/02/1770 PROB 11/955/173.
