Elizabeth Adams formerly Goodall (née Symons)

The monument at St Anthony's Montserrat recorded in Caribbeana to Richard Symons of Montserrat (d. 1820) was erected by his sister, identified in an extract from Notes & Queries as 'Supposed to have been Mrs Adams of Bristol.' This was Elizabeth Adams, whose will proved in 1830 confirms her as the sister of Richard Symons of Montserrat and clarifies family relationships that are garbled in the text in Caribbeana.

1. Will of Elizabeth Adams widow of Stapleton Gloucestershire [made in 1825] proved 11/11/1830. In the will she identified herself as the widow of Rev. Alexander Adams late of Belton in the parish of Stanton Drew and before that widow of Thomas Goodall and formerly Elizabeth Symons spinster. The will is detailed and is amplified by several codicils. Its main concern was to leave £10,000 in consols for the benefit of her daughter Elizabeth Elderfield and her (the testator's) grandchildren identified as Richard Symons Goodall, Elizabeth Goodall, William Goodall, Charlotte Goodall and Charles Hammond Goodall, and to provide support for her lunatic brother Samuel. The will is conspicuously silent on the parents of her grandchildren. She left to Richard Symons Goodall the dwelling house etc. of her late brother Richard Symons that had descended to her as heiress at law, together the latter's 'several domestic slaves.'
