Slave-owner in Jamaica and possibly St Kitts, whose daughter and heir Elizabeth (q.v. under Elizabeth Philips nee Spence) married Charles Philips (q.v.).

Administration of the will of James Spence [heretofore of Jamaica but now] of St Clement Danes [and shortly intending to make a voyage tot he island of St Christopher] [made in 1783] granted 02/11/1784. He left all his [unspecified] property in trust (his trustees were Neil Malcolm of Queen Ann Street, Samuel Span of Bristol and Henry Holt of St Clement Danes) for the separate use of his daughter Elizabeth, the wife of Charles Philips of St Kitts.
