John Whitmore of Old Jewry

London merchant trading to Portugal and New Lloyd's subscriber in 1771, purchaser of two annuities from Thomas Walpole (q.v.) likely to have been secured on slave-property but not to date traced further, and father of John Whitmore MP and Governor of the Bank of England 1808-1810.

1. Will of John Whitmore merchant of Old Jewry [made in 1788] proved 03/09/1791. He left: his estate at Epsom to his son John Whitmore; £20,000 to his son William over and above what he was entitled to under John Whitmore's marriage settlement with William's late mother; £15,000 4% consolidated bank annuities to his daughter Catherine 'being part of a larger sum of those annuities now standing in my name'; an annuity of £100 p.a. to 'Ann Jones spinster who hath been a servant in my family and had the care of my two sons'. He specified that any costs arising from proceedings over 'two several annuities granted by Thos. Walpole Esq.', one payable for the life of his daughter and one payable for the life of Ann Jones, be met from his estate not from the two women. His residuary heir was his son John Whitmore.
