Resident slave-owner on Nevis.

  1. The summary by Vere Langford Oliver shows that in the will of James Brodbelt made and sworn in 1775, he left an annuity of £400 p.a. to his wife, and £3000 to his daughter Elizabeth the wife of Richard Stanley. He left his plantation 'of 250 acres and 100 negroes' to his son Richard Brodbelt; his plantation lately Herberts and 50 negroes and Frosts and 25 acres [sic] to his son Joseph Herbert Brodbelt; his plantation lately purchased of John Pinney and 15 acres and 50 acres to his son George Campbell Brodbelt. The inventory valued his property at £42,073 and specified two of his estates as Morning Star of 174 a[cres] and Pembroke of 110 a[cres].
