Margaret Haldane Campbell (née Robertson)

Margaret Haldane Campbell née Robertson, wife of William Campbell (q.v.), awarded compensation as a representative of her stepdaughter Lydia Campbell (q.v.).

1. Born 28/08/1801 and baptised 14/10/1801 in Peebles, Scotland, to John Murray Robertson, a Writer to the Signet, and his wife Elizabeth née Williamson. At some point after 1823, she married William Campbell, an Army officer. She was his second wife. They had at least 3 children, all born in Girthon, Kirkcudbrightshire: Thomas Collow (born 22/12/1832), Agnes Ferguson (born 29/06/1834) and James Robertson (born 25/02/1836). William had at least three children from his first marriage: it is unclear whether a fourth, John R. Campbell, born c. 1828, was the son of his first wife or of Margaret. In the census of 1841, she was living at Roseville, Girthon, Kirkcudbrightshire, age 35, with William Campbell age 45, "Ind.[ependant Means]", John age 13, Thomas age 8, Agnes age 6, 1 tutor and 2 female servants. She was at the same address in 1851 with her husband, "Lieut Halfpay Ft Rgt Army", her son James R. Campbell age 15, 1 male servant and 2 female servants. William died in 1857. In the 1861 census she was  age 58, "Annuitant", the head of the household at Roseville, Anne Street, Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbrightshire, with her two stepdaughters Elizabeth and Lydia, her daughter Agnes and 2 female servants. She was at the same address in 1871, again with her stepdaughters, daughter and 2 female servants. She died at Roseville, 23/06/1880.
