Samuel Mainley

Slave-owner in Jamaica, in Bristol when he made his will in 1812 but in Jamaica again in 1814 when he made a codicil, dying c. 1815.

1. Will of Samuel Mainley of Bristol proved 27/04/1816. He left money from bond debts owed to him in Jamaica among three young men in England, all apprenticed and possibly his natural sons. He manumitted his 'negro slave' Jenny and her child Caroline in St Elizabeth, and a 'quadroon' girl named Ann Brodie, the daughter of a free mulatto woman named Catherine Mainley 'purchased under a writ against the estate of William Beckford.' In a codicil he said that he had recently bought an estate he named as Malvern Well from Henry Cerf and Abraham Cohen, which he ordered to be sold [this estate has not yet been traced by LBS among the three estates named Malvern Well]; in the codicil he identified himself as a native of Bromsgrove.
